The new Dunmail collection is now available online.
Legend has it that the crown of Dunmail, the last King of Cumbria, lies in Grisedale Tarn, cast into the depths by his faithful warriors after the King’s final, fatal battle. Drawing on Cumbria’s rich landscape of mountains and lakes, the region’s heritage of mountaineering, wild fishing and outdoor pursuits informs the design, materials and construction of the Collection.
CORDURA, the material used to make Dunmail Bags, was originally developed during WWII. For over four decades it has been the material choice for both military and civilian applications requiring lightweight durability in demanding field conditions. The 500 denier CORDURA fabric used for Dunmail is woven in Lancashire, England and bonded to cotton backing.
Dunmail features unique toggle fastenings, inspired by traditional fishing floats. These are made in England from turned domestic ash, waxed and finished with marine quality paint. Combined with English woven shock cord, the closure mechanism offers an intuitive and one handed action.
The solid brass hardware is cast in Walsall in the West Midlands, traditionally a centre of excellence for British engineering. The designs echo traditional mountaineering features, such as the easily adjustable four bar slide used on the rucksack straps. Military grade cotton webbing woven in England completes the package.
Dunmail offers interior organization for modern technology, including fully padded laptop and tablet compartments, as well as individual pockets for phones and pens. The Collection respectfully blends the old and the new, celebrating Cumbria’s heritage in rural pursuits from a modern perspective. A Dunmail bag is entirely appropriate for use in town or country and we hope you have the opportunity to enjoy both.
